Mosquito Bits come in dry, granular form. To use the product, a measured amount is mixed in water in a watering can and then poured into a pot so that the potting soil is thoroughly drenched. The bacteria remain active for just 2 days, during which time many of them will be consumed by the fungus gnat larvae. To stop an infestation of fungus gnats in your hibiscus pots the Mosquito Bits should be poured into the pot every other day for a total of 3 treatments. Mosquito Bits will not have any effect on adult fungus gnats but will eliminate the infestation by breaking the life cycle of the gnats, thus preventing the next generation from becoming adults.
Mosquito Bits will not harm plants. It is not necessary to wet the plant leaves when drenching the pots but if the solution is poured over the leaves there will be no harm to the plant.
An added bonus of having Mosquito Bits on hand to treat potted plants for fungus gnats is that you can also use the product to treat for mosquitos around the garden. The product can be added to ponds or any standing water around the area, and will effectively eliminate mosquitoes that are growing there. Full directions for treating mosquitos are on the label.
Directions for use against fungus gnat larvae:
Mix 1 teaspoon of the Mosquito Bits with 1 gallon of water. Stir until dissolved. Drench each pot that may be infested with fungus gnat larvae with the solution. Repeat treatment every other day until 3 treatments have been made.
