'Cupcake' and its Many Blooms

Tropical Hibiscus 'Cupcake'

'Cupcake' blooms with a cute little 5-7" pink flower that looks a lot like cupcakes with with frosting on the edges. The flowers are small and relatively unspectacular in the exotic hibiscus world, but this hibiscus blooms like crazy, and the sheer volume of flowers makes up for the small size. It comes from the interesting cross of classic hibiscus 'Erin Rachel' and 'Blue President,' whose parents were the garden variety 'President' and the classic exotic 'Renaissance blue.' 'Cupcake' is part of our HVH hybridization program's quest to create better bushes and more blooming for exotic hibiscus by bringing the genes of the very best garden varieties into the genetic pool of our exotic hibiscus. We will use 'Cupcake' in a next generation of hybrids to carry its blooming ability forward into varieties with larger flowers. We usually don't sell our middle-step hybridizing cultivars, but we thought some of our customers might enjoy this one because of the sheer joy of its many blooms. Released from HVH in 2011.
